Inside the Classrooms - Upper Primary

In Upper Primary we are writing independently and editing our own work using a range of tools. We write ‘across’ the curriculum – story writing and narrative, report writing for mathematics and science and for our unit of enquiry. Our knowledge of the conventions of writing – punctuation and grammar – is growing steadily and our keyboard skills are being continually developed through use of classroom technology. We read for pleasure as well as to acquire information. In class, we sometimes read aloud, sometimes silently and occasionally in a group. We regularly take books home to read and share.

In Mathematics our knowledge of number operations is becoming more complex . We work with numbers to 1000, solve problems, apply strategies and are able to articulate our reasoning. We begin to learn about fractions, three-dimensional shape, and standard units of measurement.

In Science we follow a programme which stimulates our understanding in four keys areas: Forces and Energy, Materials and Matter, Earth and Space and Living Things. We enjoy our weekly experiments and are learning to work in a ‘scientific’ way: collecting and organising data, understanding the principles of the ‘fair test’ and making connections.

The basic principles of physics and mathematics underpin our growing understanding that the world around us can be explained through science and mathematics, and we can use real-life examples and familiar experiences to demonstrate this.
