At ISCAT this morning we were happy to welcome Sara from SOS Racisme to give two separate talks to Primary and Secondary students regarding the work which SOS Racisme does in Catalunya, their mission and purpose. Sara began by exploring our understanding of stereotypes, our prejudices (we all have them!) and discrimination …. Together with the students, she explored the underlying causes of racism, and our responsibilities in recognising and combatting this. Students themselves were able to identify several potentially divisive factors in daily life, such as language, gender, sexual orientation, as well as nationality and skin colour.
From our UNICEF programme, and the values which our school embodies, our students displayed not only a heightened awareness of these issues, but also were comfortable explaining responsibilities and behavioural strategies when racism is encountered.
Sara complemented them on their maturity and the degree of social responsibility and empathy which was evident in their responses.
We thank SOS Racisme for spending time with us today and know that Sara’s message has helped to reinforce some of ISCAT’s most cherished values: inclusion, tolerance, kindness, and honesty.
