Juan Barcena

Juan Barcena

HEAD OF SECONDARY

Juan graduated from the University of New Orleans with a Masters in Romance Languages. A seasoned traveller, his work as an educator has taken him to many exotic and diverse locations around the globe – Costa Rica, New Orleans, India -excelling as a teacher of Spanish and P.E within the British system in all his posts. He is especially interested in everything sports-related, travel and food. A keen writer, Juan’s first book ‘Latidos’ – a beautiful account of his travels around the globe, was published in 2020. His second novel, ‘Jartarse a Morir’ – a story based on a real-life incident of mysterious deaths in France, was published in November 2023. Juan teaches Spanish at ISCAT and is currently acting Head of Secondary and A Levels (Sixth Form).

Katherine Mayne

Katherine Mayne

HEAD OF A LEVELS, HISTORY & LAW TEACHER

Katherine completed her BA Hons in Political Science at Newcastle University and then proceeded to take the Graduate Diploma in Law from Leeds Metropolitan University. For the first part of her career Katherine worked in asylum and refugee law . After deciding to pursue an alternative path Katherine completed a PGCE with Nottingham University and taught for 5 years in an international school in Thailand, before returning to the UK to complete her QTS in her hometown of Newcastle. She is Head of A Levels, as well as our History & Law teacher. She enjoys travelling and learning more about other cultures and peoples and tries to bring this international perspective into her teaching wherever possible.

Kirsty Mansfield

HEAD OF ENGLISH & EXAMS OFFICER

Kirsty is originally from the UK, however she’s been living in Spain for many years. She obtained her BA Honours Degree in English and Media Studies from Swansea University. After relocating to Spain, she acquired a CELTA certification to teach English as a second language and has dedicated over 10 years to teaching English to a wide variety of age groups and levels. In her free time, Kirsty enjoys eating the local cuisine and trying new restaurants. She is an avid reader, and also loves cinema, hanging out with friends and walking the family dogs.

YEAR 11 FORM TUTOR, PSYCHOLOGY & ENGLISH TEACHER, HEAD OF SENDCO

As well as being SENDCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) at ISCAT Vicky is also the P.E. and psychology teacher. She is English and has lived in Catalunya for over 5 years. Vicky holds a masters qualification in Inclusion and Special Needs and was the Head of Special Needs at al large secondary school in London for several years . Vicky’s practice is based on her belief that every child has the potential for success and she is passionate about promoting equal opportunities for children. She is also a qualified English language teacher. She loves sports and regularly plays tennis and padel as well as hiking and cycling in the mountains.
Lucy Auton

Lucy Auton

A LEVEL MATHS TEACHER

Lucy holds a First-Class Master’s degree (MMath) and a DPhil (PhD) in Mathematics and Engineering Science, both from the University of Oxford. She has over six years of experience teaching there as a College Lecturer and has received an award for excellence in teaching. For seven years, she was closely involved in Oxford University’s mathematics admissions process, contributing to the development of mark schemes, marking tests, designing interview questions, leading candidate interviews, and helping to make admissions decisions. Outside the classroom, she enjoys walking her dog in the mountains, hula hooping, and playing board games.

Charles Cadet

ART TEACHER

Charles is our Art & Design teacher for secondary, GCSE and A level. Originally from France, Charles has a degree in Fine Art from the University of Biarritz. He has worked in different sectors of art and design, such as illustration, fashion, the visual arts, cinema, 2D animation and photography. He has been living in Spain for over three years, where, aside from teaching, he has been working in costume design. In his free time Charles loves running, going to the cinema, relaxing with friends and pursuing his passion for clothing design and the visual arts. Charles inspires a love of artistic endeavour in all his students, making Art and Design one of the most popular subject choices at ISCAT.

 
 
Stephanie Law

Stephanie Law

YEAR 12 TUTOR & BIOLOGY TEACHER

Steph teaches biology at ISCAT to GCSE and A-Level . Her love of biology is reflected by the pursuit of her own education as she holds a BSc, MSc and PhD in biology. Steph especially loves tropical forests and has spent ten years researching the incredible biodiversity found there, from tracking monitor lizards in the Philippines to collecting ants in Borneo and exploring the global importance of termites. Steph obtained her QTS qualification in the UK and has over eight years teaching experience, specialising in A-Level biology. She loves to share her passion with others and has led scientific youth expeditions to the Amazon rainforest and Namib desert. Steph has now settled with her family here in Spain and enjoys exploring the area in her campervan. She particularly loves climbing, hiking or cycling in the mountains.

Matthew Green

BUSINESS & ENGLISH TEACHER

Matt brings a rich global perspective to his teaching, having travelled to 57 countries and volunteered in Africa and Asia. He holds a degree from Northumbria University, UK, and postgraduate teaching qualifications from the University of Nottingham, UK. Now teaching Business and English, Matt draws on his diverse experiences to help students make real-world connections in their learning and to think critically about the global environment around them. Recently, he has also taken on the exciting new role of becoming a dad. Outside of the classroom, he enjoys long walks in nature with his dog and is always eager to explore new parts of the world.

Iris Flotats

YEAR 10 FORM TUTOR, CATALAN & SPANISH TEACHER

Iris is our secondary Catalan and Spanish teacher and Year 10 form tutor. She holds a degree in Catalan Language and Literature from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and also the ELE and CELTA certificates to teach Spanish and English as second languages. She has been teaching languages for 10 years in both language academies and secondary schools. Iris loves working with teenagers and helping them channel their energy so as to achieve their goals. In her free time, she trains to enter open-water swimming competitions and hikes with her dog. She also writes poetry in different languages and enjoys using creative writing in the classroom to enhance students’ writing skills.
Isaac Mestres

Isaac Mestres

CHEMISTRY, MATHS & SCIENCE TEACHER

Isaac began his career in the research and innovation sector in 2013 as a project engineer for a tech spin-off in the Barcelona area, the same year he earned his Master’s in Environmental Engineering from the University of Barcelona. Teaching has always been a core passion for Isaac, and he has honed his skills in various contexts and countries, including Belgium, Israel, and Spain. Isaac’s lessons are designed to foster critical thinking and empower students with the scientific method and a rational mindset. He emphasizes precision and accuracy, incorporating real-life case studies into his teaching to help students develop proficiency throughout the academic year. In his free time he enjoys trail running, trekking and sustainable beekeeping. 

Scott Shepherd

GEOGRAPHY & TEACHER

Scott teaches Geography across the different Key Stages in Secondary. He also plays an active role in ISCAT’s Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Having trained as a Geographer at the California State University, Sacramento, Scott worked as a Research Analyst for the State of California, testing new technologies such as the global positioning system and geographical information systems, giving him 14 years experience of working with maps, demographics, geology and databases. He has been stimulated and strengthened by the international relocations he has made with his family, and his daily joys and rewards include the positive feedback on lessons from his students, yoga, strenuous hikes and bike rides – all of which have driven his resolve as much as his endurance!

Daniella Quintana

Daniella Quintana

SPANISH, GLOBAL SKILLS & COMPUTING

Daniella teaches Spanish as a second language. She studied Hotel Management and Marketing in her native Costa Rica, where she worked for 13 years, discovering her passion for teaching when she moved to India in 2015, teaching Spanish in an international school there for three years. Daniella holds certification in teaching of Spanish from ELEInternacional and has since dedicated over eight years to the teaching of Spanish to a wide range of age groups, levels, and nationalities. At ISCAT, aside from Spanish, Dani teaches Global Skills and Computing at Key Stage 3. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her young daughter, practising pilates, and planning trips. She loves travelling and discovering new places and cultures.

Isaura Duran

Isaura Duran

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

Isaura is our school Psychologist. She graduated from the University of Barcelona with a degree in Child and Youth Psychology in 1998, with a Masters in learning disabilities and a postgraduate course in psychomotor therapy. She also holds a Practitioner qualification in NLP and has a wide experience in clinical psychology. She has owned a psychology surgery since 2000 and has been working as a school counselor and educational psychologist for nearly 20 years. She joined ISCAT in 2013, forming part of the SEN Department and provides support and guidance to students with emotional or learning difficulties. She also advises teachers and families, liaises with external professionals and works together with our SENDCO. In her free time Isaura loves cooking and sports and regularly practices swimming and goes hiking.
